Meaning of Home

To me, the meaning of home is a place where you feel safe and supported by the people that you love. A home does not have to be the place you live. It could be anywhere you feel safe and loved. I feel at home and loved at church and at my house. There is a difference between a house and a home. The dictionary says the definition of the word house is ‘a building for human habitation.’ This means that a house is a building where people live. Not everyone has a house, but I would like to think that most people have a home because a home is somewhere you feel safe. According to the dictionary a home is just a place you live in. It’s not. A home could be where you live, but it is so much more than that. A home could be a secret fort you have with your friends. It could be a tree you climb every day after school until your parents make you come inside for supper. It could be someone else’s house, like your grandparent’s or best friend’s house. It could be the garden you helped your dad plant and eat fresh vegetables from in the summer. It could be the little nook in your basement where you sit and read. A home is also a feeling. You might have heard the expression feeling at home. When you feel safe, loved, and secure you feel at home. There is another expression about home. This saying is home is where your heart is. I think this means that your home can be with things or people that you love. Matthew 6:21 says ‘For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.’
