House and Home

All over the world people move from house to house, Home to Home. And when I was younger, I was one of those people. I didn’t understand why I had to leave this place I called my Home. This was the place of all my memories, the place where I had spent so many nights and days; I’d spent nearly my entire life here! I didn’t know that I was lucky enough to only move neighbourhoods; I didn't realize that people move cities, provinces, countries, even continents! My Mom and my Dad knew, and they helped me get used to the new house. Slowly, we began to befriend our new neighbours, make new memories, and settle into the house. And somewhere along the way, I began to think of the new house as a new Home. I still think of the old house as a Home, but it feels more like a Home in another life now. Now this Home seems like it was always like this, like I lived here my entire life, surrounded by my beloved books, the home-cooked food my parents made, my sister’s little songs, friendly voices, talk, laughter, and always, always, the love of my family. Habitat for Humanity, you have helped me realize just how much my Home means to me. While I was writing this, my mind was sifting through all the memories I made in both my homes. All of the feelings of doubt, uncertainty during the move, and the happiness and joy I felt in my new Home once I got more used to it. Thank you for helping me realize just how much I loved both of my Homes and for helping unfortunate people all over Canada find homes or get better homes and slowly making Canada a better place.
