The Five Senses of Home

To make a home you need to build it out of the five senses: seeing, smelling, tasting, hearing, and feeling. It can’t feel forced, but the exact opposite-natural, joyful, loving, and cozy. There are many sounds that make my house a home. My dad’s loud rock n’ roll playing in the living room makes me feel like I'm safe because when I was little, I used to dance to that music. I feel loved when my parents laugh hysterically at my funniest jokes. I feel joyful when I hear the beginning of our movie playing because I know there is a fun moment awaiting. There are also many sensations that make my house a home, like the snug blanket warming my body and the hot shower water hitting my skin. It makes me feel cozy in the frosty winter. Now what about that smell, taste, or sight? The smell of the lavender candles I light when I do yoga, they make me feel like I’m flying away. Now what about the chorizo cooking before dinner-oh that smoky garlic smell! It reminds me of the taste of the healthy yet delicious pasta my mom makes every so often. The 300 cookies my mom makes at Christmas, now those taste like heaven. One of my favourite things is to see is my mom and dad doing embarrassing dance moves in the kitchen, but really, it's super funny. But what really makes me feel at home is when it's clean and there's no clutter! Lots of storage space!!!!! I think Habitat for Humanity is an amazing program because it helps people find great homes. Remember home does not mean a glamorous home. It means a home filled with love. No one needs a mansion. They just need happiness.
