Home is Where I Create Memories
When I moved from Cuba to Canada, I thought my new home was strange. When I got used to it, I started to make new memories. I was laughing and playing board games with my sister. She’s the queen of Clue and I am the king of air hockey. I love to watch movies at night on the porch with a mountain of snacks. We laugh when we see something funny, and we giggle together. These are memories that I will always share with my sister.
I feel the love in Mom's Cuban food she prepares for me. My favorite is rice and beans with plantains, a type of banana. When I eat this food, it takes me back to when I was younger living in Santiago De Cuba. When she calls me down to eat, we tell stories about our day. We listen to Cuban music in the background and sometimes we dance to it.
Outside, my dad shows me new ways to play basketball and tells me to put my heart into the game. He shows me different shooting techniques and gets my shot better. He shares his past knowledge of how to fix motorcycles and many more things. Now that he’s retired, we play more basketball and tries to teach me French. I love his famous steak. My favorite way to cook is medium and ribeye is my favorite type of steak.
I'm very grateful for my home with my mom's Cuban food and my dad’s knowledge. My sister's smile brightens up my day. Altogether, I'm thankful for my house and beautiful family.
Thank you, Habitat for Humanity, for helping other people create brand new memories and better lives like mine.
