The London Home
Tearfully she said goodbye to her one and only friend, Rose. She was upset to be leaving her friend behind. As she walked the way home for the very last time she wondered if she would have a friend after she moved to London. She was nervous of what London would be like.
Ten-year-old Ivy placed her bags on the conveyor belt to go onto the plane. She was going to move far away from everything she knew and into a whole new world. London was very far away and even though they still spoke English everything was done very differently.
When her and her mom stepped outside the airport in London, her mom called a cab. They were headed to their already furnished apartment. They settled into their apartment and had sushi for dinner. It didn’t feel like home yet.
On the first day of school Ivy introduced herself to her class. Everyone started whispering about her and called her the Winnipeg girl. She felt annoyed, and angry at her classmates because it was not nice to be made fun of. Then when it was time for gym, she entered the change room and everyone stopped talking. Sarah Sparrow stepped up, “Don’t you know how to speak English? We can barely understand you.”, said Sarah. Ivy was about to respond when a teacher appeared. Jane, a person in her class, had gone to get a teacher. Now Sarah got in trouble. Ivy felt grateful to Jane for helping solve the problem.
When Ivy’s mom came to pick her up, she asked Ivy how she was feeling about London so far. Ivy said London is really starting to feel like home to me because I have made a friend today.
