Meaning of Home

Meaning of Home Home. The one dream we all have in common. But, what is a home? What does home mean? A home is 3 things. A home is family, belonging and most of all love; but that’s a very broad definition. To make it less broad, I’m going to look at these categories and explain them. What is the first thing you think about when I say home? Familiarity? Love? A house? All of these things are a home, but in my opinion, family fits best. A family doesn’t have to be just children, pets, and parents. A family can be by blood, or of the heart. Not only is your family important to you, but a family is also an integral part of a home. Without a family, a building is just a house, not a home. There is a reason that family comes from the Latin word for slave; it’s because, in a family, everyone is everyone’s slave. Everyone works together to make a functioning household. A family is children running around, sharing meals around a dinner table, relaxing in front of a fire; but most of all, it is belonging. Feeling a sense of belonging in a house makes a house into a home. What does belonging mean? Does it mean being in a group? Does it mean being comfortable? It actually means both of these things, but much more than that, belonging is having a sense of purpose. It’s having a thing to be and do. Belonging makes you feel comfortable in a place and with people. It allows you to be you. It means having familiar things and people around you. Belonging is an important part of life. If you don’t truly belong somewhere, you cannot feel truly happy. Lastly, home is love. Arguably, it is the most important part of a home. It’s that wire that keeps a family tethered together. It’s the support that makes a home. It is the foundation of a family. Love is a connection between people. But, it doesn’t stop there. It can be a familiarity with objects and a feeling of understanding. Love is important to a home. It keeps families together and working to stay together. A home is a different idea for everyone. Some of us think of it as just the place where we live, but I think that it is much more. It is a dream of belonging. A place for love, familiarity, fun and peace.
