The Home in Which I Roam

Not everyone knows what a home really means, Some think it is merely a roof and walls with small decorations, But once we lose it we begin to think, Just how much our home really is… What is a home? Everyone has their own definition of a home. Some don’t really know, others think it is a shelter. But, the truth is, it is none of those, and all of those. A home is what ties you to life, it is what shows you where to go and what to do. A home is not merely wood and metal but life and love. A home is where you make memories, where you struggle through life, where you feel strain and pain. A home is not just a structure but a metaphysical thing. It shifts with you wherever you go and remains in your heart forever. There is a reason why the saying goes: “There is no place like home” That remains true to this day. It is where your parents wait to hear about your day, It is where they cook for you and care for you, Where you work late into the night to solve that last problem, Or where you watch movies or play games with those around you, it is part of the essence of a human being. It is where you feel safest to just be yourself. You are around the people and things that are part of you. It is where your parents worry about and you laugh it off. But, secretly you hold onto it as you step out the door.. So many people have no house and yet they call a small tent home, others have giant houses but are not truly their home. This is because the people who know a home have something there, something with loved ones and memories galore. A house is a structure meant to contain and keep out. It is a bare and cold structure at first. But then you move into it. And soon enough what you physically and metaphorically put in forms a sort of color. And that color dances around and finally finishes what makes your home. As soon as you enter a house you start making out the color. As you stay in more, the color becomes evidently more clear. The color is ever changing and you never stop adding things to the color. But, look beyond the materialistic, and what do you see, something that all yet almost none have. You see what truly makes a home, is warmth and comfort and tranquility. While looking at a house others might see a desolate place, filled with cold and loneliness and too much space. Next time you return to your home, think about everything there, the sweet/salty scent of the dinner almost done, the folded up newspaper on the kitchen counter, the cries and shrieks of your siblings in their rooms, and most importantly what makes it home to you. All of this boils down to a simple, rhyming, analogy, that is 12 words: “A house is bricks and beams, a home is hopes and dreams!”
