Home Is A Feeling
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “home” as one’s place of residence.
To me home is much more than just a residence. It's more like a feeling: a feeling of safety and of pride. A place where I feel free to express myself.
Home is more than just the brick walls of your house, the stick framing of your condo, or the wooden poles and coverings that make your teepee. Home is a place to feel welcome, to get a bit crazy and just to be grateful that you have a home. Home is a structure, but more than that, it is a feeling.
It’s hard to write an essay about what home means to me. It’s like trying to explain to someone how it feels to cry with joy or how it feels to gaze at a beautiful sunset. The feeling of home is sort of like when you’re freezing and then you go under those cozy blankets in front of the fireplace while sipping a nice hot cup of cocoa. It’s like when you go on a boat, just leaving behind all your troubles and heading into this magical world that’ll accept you no matter who you are.
Being a person that was born in a far away country and has moved several times, I know what home feels like. It isn’t the houses or apartments I’ve lived in; it has always been the feeling of home, being able to speak to my family openly, while feeling understood.
In conclusion, I believe that the dictionary definition should be,
A place of residence.
A place to feel welcome, to feel proud, to feel safe, to feel grateful, to feel serene, and just to feel at home.
