Shadow finds a new home

(This is the ending of a longer story by Hazel.) Shadow and her mother Sara had been walking for days searching for a new home. They had left their home in the city because it was too dangerous for a little cat. Shadow heard a noise farther off in the forest. Shadow ran towards the sound. Her mother chased after her. Then Shadow stopped. Her mother nearly ran into her behind. They both stared at the path and saw a little girl walking with her mom. As she saw the cats, the girl tripped on a root and started to cry. Shadow tried to resist from going to comfort her but she couldn’t. The girl and her mom reminded Shadow of her mother. Not because of how they looked (they were humans after all) but how the mother ran over to help her as soon as the girl got hurt. Shadow ran over and licked the cut on the girl’s knee. Sara remembered when a human had saved her from being run over when she was a kitten. She also went over to them to help. The little girls mom pulled out a bandaid from her purse and put it on. As she was putting it on the two cats started to sniff her. “Mama look, the kitties are helping my owie. Can we keep them please?” At first the mother was reluctant, but she realized her daughter needed someone to keep her company, so she agreed they could keep them. “Let’s take them home.” “I can’t wait to show them my room and name them and buy them cat beds and play with them. It will be so fun!” The little girl talked and talked. Shadow realized this was just the kind of home she was searching for.
