Why is no one buying me? My bricks are a beautiful white with clean windows. Families came, one by one, but did not return. I was feeling sad because no one had chosen me. However, one day, a family came dressed in colourful jackets and warm winter hats, bundled up head to toe. They inspected me brick by brick before heading inside. They took their time looking around and opening every door. After an hour, they left and drove away. One week later, that same family returned with a big truck. I wondered what it was for? They took boxes from the truck and their car parked in my driveway. They stood outside and huddled to take a picture next to a SOLD sign! They were moving in! They went inside and placed things throughout the house. It seemed like they were done but they said it still didn’t feel quite right? Why? I am a great house. Mom decided they should bake chocolate chip cookies. Laughter filled the air as they made a mess of my white countertops. The smell of warm cookies filled me. The kids sat eating their gooey cookies with big smiles. The little girl turned to her mom and said, “I think this house will feel like home soon”. She hugged her mom with her chocolaty fingers and mom smiled. Watching them so happy made me realize something. A home is where you feel loved, comfortable, happy and safe. It’s where you enjoy time with family. It didn’t matter how great a house I was, how they lived inside is what mattered. It isn’t the house that makes a home. It’s the people in the house who love and care for each other and the memories they make together that make a home.
