A home is one special place

For most people, a home is one special place. But for me, it’s not just one place, it’s two. You see, my parents decided not to live together when I was 2 ½, so I have experienced what it is like going back and forth between two houses. Each one is my home. My Mom’s house smells like chocolate chip cookies, and she herself smells like a special scent that I just can’t describe, but it makes me feel comforted and safe. My Dad’s house smells like strange foods that I have never tried before, and sourdough toast made from the bakery just down the road. I have a dog that travels with me to both houses who snores like a warthog with a stuffed-up nose. But let's talk about how music can make a house feel like a home. My dad always plays jazz music, and my mom always has a mix of country music, jazz, rock, and everything in between, so that you never know what she will play next. Colour can also make you feel like you are safe and calm. The walls of my mom’s house are covered in bright white paint and have many large windows, so that every cold winter day in the country feels like a tropical vacation. The walls of my dad’s house, on the other hand, are painted a dark-as-night army green, which makes the house ominous and spooky. Another thing that can make a house a home is that my mom always makes us pastries of all sorts. At my dad’s house, every Friday night is pizza night, but instead of going out to a restaurant, he makes his own homemade pizza and dough. I am so lucky to have two different places that I can call my home.
