Home, in All Its Small Moments Woven into Memories
Home means many things, but to me, home is a feeling of comfort, love, and belonging. It is sitting at the dinner table with my family, laughing and talking while sharing a meal together. It is being in my room late at night, crocheting with a warm cup of hot chocolate beside me, feeling calm and safe.
Home is listening to music while scrolling on Pinterest, hanging out with my childhood friends, playing games in the park, and walking through my old neighborhood again. It is long road trips, like the ten-hour drive to New Jersey with a Tim Hortons breakfast, and quiet nights watching shows with my sister or arguing playfully with my brother.
Home also means traveling to Pakistan to visit my family. It is staying up past midnight laughing over dessert, shopping in busy markets, attending weddings, and seeing my baby cousins. My culture and religion are also part of home. Friday classes, Ramadan fasting from dawn till dusk, and late-night Taraweeh prayers teach me gratitude and bring me peace. Eid is when I truly feel like myself—dressing up, going to Eid prayer, visiting family, and celebrating together.
Home is the smell of my mom’s fresh cooking filling the house with spices, baking cookies and cakes for fun or for my friends’ birthdays and staying up late talking. Sometimes, home is crying quietly at night, listening to music in a hoodie, or staring at the stars with my worries. Home is also morning sunlight through my window, warm blankets on cold days, journaling my thoughts, hearing rain at night, sharing inside jokes, celebrating small victories, and knowing I belong no matter where life takes me forever there. All these little moments come together like paint on a canvas, making me feel safe, loved, and at home.
