The Meaning of Home
The Meaning of Home
By Danielle Wiebe
Is home determined by the walls that surround us or the people within it? I believe that a home is determined by those who we share it with. If my home didn’t have my family and pets in it, it wouldn't feel like home at all, and only a sad empty place. A true home is safe, happy and welcoming.
Firstly, everyone's home should be safe. When people feel safe their nervous system goes down allowing them to grow and thrive. This is crucial for children so they can focus on schooling, to learn and flourish. This is also important for adults so they can prioritize their time making exciting memories with their kids and being gleeful. As you can see, there are countless important reasons to have a secure home.
While many people don’t have the luxury of a happy home, it’s beneficial for one to strive for one. People who do have happy lives have a 46% lower risk of depression. It is important that people are joyful because it allows lower stress levels which lowers the chance of illnesses and it also allows people to have more creativity. In conclusion, when people have a cheerful home they can live their lives more freely and stress free.
A welcoming home gives us the feeling that someone has actually lived there and it’s not perfect. All the chips in the walls, pictures on the mantle, and the ticks in the doorway to track our height along with all the laughter and warmness makes us feel welcome. This lets us feel calm and relaxed. When you feel these things you can concentrate on everyday tasks like school, sports and to remember to pick up your kids. Lastly, having a warm and inviting home helps your mental health drastically.
In the long run, many things make up an incredible home, including having a secure, cheerful, and inviting feeling. In my opinion, if my home didn’t have these feelings, it would just be a structure and nothing more. In the end, the most important thing in a home isn’t the furniture or foundation, it's the people who are in it.
