An Unlikely Home

It was supposed to be a relaxing weekend, but just as I sat down on my couch ready to watch a movie, I heard a knock on my door. A feeling of insecurity washed through my veins. The door was still knocking, but there was no shadow behind the blurred glass. “ Who's there?” no answer. I opened the door, but no one was there. Just as I turned around, there was a knock again. This time when I opened it, there was a little possum sitting on the doorstep. I looked around, and then picked it up. It was cold and wet, so I put it on a warm towel and went to make it some food. I knew the possum was starving, because once I set the bowl of food on the table, it guzzled it up in a matter of minutes. I gave it a bath, and put it in a clean sock. Once I made sure that the possum was asleep, I crawled into bed, and dozed off. When I woke up in the morning, the possum wasn’t anywhere in the house. All that was left were some little footprints leading to the door. To my surprise, there was $15,000 sitting on my counter. Where the possum went, I’ll never know, but I’m glad I found it, not because of the money, but because I helped it to enjoy a warm, safe home, and that’s more important than anything!
