What Home Means to Me

What Home Means to Me By: Allison Matthews “Home is where the heart is”. It’s a common saying. One of these words can mean a lot of things. Home. The google definition of home is, “the place where one lives permanently, especially as a member of a family or household.” It’s a short summary of home. For some it’s a house where they live, for others it’s a place where they bake with their parents, but for most, it can be so much more. Family is a large part of home for most people. Some people have 10, 20, or more people living at their home, while others have 1, 2, or 3. Laura Ingalls Wilder once said, “Home is the nicest word there is.” This is true for many people all across the world. It’s also different for every person in the world. Everyone celebrates different things, like the Lunar New Year on February 10, or Thanksgiving on October 14 in Canada and November 23 in the USA, or Christmas on December 24, or Valentines day on February 14. There are different types of homes too. Apartments, Bungalows, Cottages, Mansions, Rentals, the list goes on and on. For instance, say you are walking to school or work one day and you decide to look at all of the houses to see their differences. One house is an orangy-red while the next one is a pale baby blue. There’s an apartment building on your street too. The owners there have given the people who live there permission to paint their apartment. A hot pink apartment beside a neon green one. A blue apartment beside a red apartment. An orange one next to a purple one. This proves that no home is the same.The only thing I can think of where they would have the same layout is apartments, townhouses, and hotels. What does home mean to me though? For me home is where me and my family are. My family consists of me, my mom, my dad, and my dog. Home, to me, also means family reunions and curling up on the couch to read a good book. In conclusion, home means a lot of things. For some, family, for some books, for some siblings, for some baking, and so many more things. But for most, home is a safe place.
