Safety and Love

My name is Beniyas, a grade 4 student from St. John XXIII Catholic School. Home is feeling love, just like me and how I live a peaceful life with my lovely family starting from Ethiopia to planting rich roots here in Toronto, Canada where we live a good life. A home goes beyond its walls. For me, it starts from waking up in the morning to prepare for school with my family; helping each other to be on time to get to the school that I love where my friends await me. However, this idea is lost for homeless people. Not having a home leads to a loss of hope. It is important that communities create these environments for them. Victims of war have it worse as their lives are filled with loss, emotional distress and trauma while being forced to flee in search of safety. Habitat for Humanity Canada is a national non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe place to live. They mobilize communities to help working lower-income families build stability and self-reliance. Statistics show that since 1985, over 4,309 families have access to a safe and decent home by partnering with this organization. The cost of housing is so high where hardworking families have to choose between paying rent and necessities, such as food or childcare. Habitat for Humanity’s mission is important for helping those in need access safe and affordable homes. My hope is to fundraise to move people from the streets and make temporary shelters. Then, the goal would be to create programs so that the homeless have opportunities to find jobs to afford rent. In conclusion, a home is a symbol for safety and love. Everyone has a right to it and we need to help make it happen.
