The Meaning of Home

A home is a house, but sometimes, a house is not a home. To me, a home is a state of mind, a feeling. You see, a house is simply a meaningless building where people live, it is built with strong hands and machinery. A home is a place where you feel love, comfort, a place where you can recognize even the faintest of smells. A home is built with trust, support and admiration. Homes hold memories like a sponge, it soaks up feelings, emotions and love. The walls are laced with tears, laughter, and hugs. Home is where you can always smell the scent of your rotten siblings, hidden by the smell of a smoky cologne. A home is a place where you recognize the savoury scent of your mom’s signature cookies, a place where you recognize the prolonged sound of the neighbours dog yapping as they frantically call for them. A home is a place where you recognize your dog’s bold embrace and the clatter of paws on the cold hardwood floor. Homes are for music, for chatter, and for acceptance. It is a place where you belong, where your pride is endless, where traditions are started, and where you grew up and where you still continue to grow and learn. There is so much that makes a home a home, just know that wherever you are, whatever you do, you will always have a home. Thank you Habitat for Humanity for bringing the foundational materials for a home to families in need.
