A Home Can Be...

A home doesn’t have to be a house, and a house doesn’t have to be a home. A home is where you are loved, safe, and comfortable. A home can be anything.  A home can be sound. My home is full of sounds like creaky floors, and people going up and down stairs. It’s full of us slamming doors because they don’t stay shut otherwise, the sound of the oven beeping while Kelly’s cooking, and playing video games. It’s the sound of laughter and fun, and my dog being silly.   A home can be a smell. My home is full of the smell of Kelly’s amazing cooking, and the smell of all the plants. It’s the smell of Kelly’s perfume, our laundry detergent that smells weirdly delicious, and the smell of smoke on our jackets after a camping trip.  A home can be a taste. My home is full of the taste of Kelly’s amazing chicken teriyaki stir-fry, the taste of cookies and cake, and the taste of soda during sleepovers. It’s the taste of candy and chocolate after Halloween, and pancakes with syrup.  A home can be a sight. My home is full of elephant figures from Kelly’s many travels, our clothes from many camping trips and vacations, my messy room full of books and stuffed animals. It’s full of my dog’s chew toys, our homemade ornaments from my younger years, and Kelly’s beautiful candles.  A home can be a feeling. My home is full of the feeling of love, happiness, and joy. Its the feeling of being SO full, you feel like you’re going to burst after Kelly’s delicious dinners.   To me, home is the five senses: taste, touch, sound, smell, and sight. Thank you, Habitat for Humanity, for helping others know the feeling of home.
