This is Home
This is Home
By Maia Embuldeniya-Fernando
Lying on my bed
With my bear Biggy
Who is older than me
Crunching chips and
Reading Matilda.
This is home.
Sitting on the stairs
Making bracelets
Of beads and feathers
For all my friends
At my new school.
This is home.
Lying on the floor
Stuffing my hamster
With treats he got for Christmas
Absentmindedly listening to
Songs from Cats.
This is home.
Resting on the couch
Warming my feet
Swinging a yoyo
Watching Avatar and
Eating popcorn.
This is home
Slumping at my desk
With my computer
Legs swinging
Scratching my head
Writing this poem.
This is home.
Sleeping in a tent
With ten people
Snuggling for warmth
With Mama and Thatha
Dreaming of a better world.
This could’ve been home.
Sitting on a bench
In a public park
Not knowing
Where I’ll be tomorrow
But still hoping.
This could’ve been home.
But it’s not for me
Yet it is for others.
Habitat for Humanity can change that,
And I can help with a poem.
