Home Can Be Anything

n Whitby, Canada there was a girl named Grace Danver who just moved from Seattle to Ontario. She did not want to move but her parents, Emma and Barry Danvers, assured her it would be fine. A week after they moved, her parents told Grace they were going to Toronto for sightseeing. Grace said she wanted to stay and watch TV because she did not like Canada. "Canada will never be my home” she said. “Please give it a chance, if you don’t like it we will move back, I promise” said Emma “Ok fine, “ said Grace. “Are you sure she will like the city?” asked Barry, “we can’t afford to move again”. "I don’t know, we have to hope though” Emma said, hopefully. After finding a parking spot, the family started walking. “Where are we walking to mom? "asked Grace. “That depends on if you're hungry or not,” said Emma. “I’m pretty hungry,” said Grace. “ Ok then off to little Anthony’s” said Emma passionately. “What’s Little Anthony's?” Grace said. “You will find out,” Emma said mysteriously. When they got there all the waiters looked at them funny. When they sat down a waiter came over to them. “Excuse me, are you Emma Danver?” The waiter asked nervously. “Why yes I am” Emma replied. The waiter looked like he was about to give her a hug but for some reason he didn’t and just asked for the family's orders. After dinner Grace said “ That dinner was delicious but how come that waiter knew you mom?” Emma just ignored her and said “ I hope you aren’t full because there is a cool thing I want to show you. After walking for 30 minutes Grace saw something. “ Wait a minute, is that the Space Needle from Seattle?” Grace said excitedly.” No it is even better and 3 times taller than the Space needle. “Can we go on it? “ Grace asked with puppy dog eyes. “Yes we can but one thing first are you starting to like Canada and think of it as your home?” Emma said hopefully. “I will tell you when you tell me why the waiter knew you, “ Grace said. I will tell you that at the end of the day surprise” Emma said. “Can I have a word with your mother for a second?” said Barry. Then he pulled her away.” Why won’t you tell Grace about your life here” asked Barry . “ I don’t want my life here to change her opinion. I want her to feel like her home, not my home” Emma said confidently. “I understand,” said Barry. After that they went to the CN Tower. On the elevator Grace said “ mom I’m scared.” “Of The elevator honey? It's perfectly safe,” Emma replied. “No, of moving, what if I forget Seattle. I don’t want to do that,” said Grace. “Honey Seattle will always be your home, think of Canada as a different home not a replacement one” Emma said sincerely. Barry smiled. They went on the CN Tower and then they went to the bottom and walked for a little bit. Grace said “I'm hungry, can we eat ice cream” “No, but I got something even better, Beavertails! ”Emma said, excitedly. “What are Beavertails?” Grace asked. “Well you find out,” Emma said annoyingly. After they got Beavertails Grace took one bite and loved it, she loved it so much she ate it in 2 minutes. After that, her parents covered her eyes and walked and showed her a boat. They told her They were going to watch the sunset while looking at Toronto. When they got on the boat Grace asked Emma “Mom, I'm still scared of moving here. I know the talk we had but home isn’t just about the place, it's about the people too. What if I don’t make friends?”. Emma responded “I know what you are going through. I was not born In Seattle. I was born here and I worked there. That's how I know the waiter. Your dad came and loved him so much that I left Canada and went to Seattle.” Grace was in shock and said “why didn’t you tell me”. “ You didn’t ask, plus, I want you to feel like this is your home, not mine.” Said Emma “and guess what my waiter friend also has a daughter, I can set up an arrangement so you can hang out together.” “Thanks mom” said Grace “This can be home, thank you for this” Emma replied “You are welcome honey.” As the sun set, Grace accepted that anything can be a home.
