What Home Means to Me "Today in class, we are going to share what home means to us. Be creative and give at least 3 ideas.” my teacher, Mrs. Heyes told us. I'm Saanvi Singh, a grade 6 student. Today I'm going to tell you how I answered that question and why my response was different from all the others in my class who answered. "Raya.” Mrs. Heyes chose from all the students raising their hands (I was the only one not raising mine). "For me, home is a place that makes me feel safe and protected, a place where I can play instead of work and a place where I have lots of fun in general.” Raya responded. “Okay, next!” Mrs. Heyes said. One by one, everyone answered until I was the only one left. Everyone before me had answered with almost the same thing and Mrs. Heyes had pointed it out several times but my classmates just replied with more fancy things which still meant the same thing. I had failed to hear that though as I was away for a long time, much to my dismay, and was working on the pile of work on my desk. This was why when the teacher called my name, I jumped a little and asked “I'm sorry, what?” as my classmates stifled their laughter. Mrs. Heyes repeated the question and I thought for a moment before saying, “Well, houses can be bought or sold but when I left my home when I came here last year, I was really sad. I was sad because I would never see my old friends again and the new house we were moving to wouldn't quite be the same so I guess what makes a house a home are the memories that were made there. “When we came to the new house, I was really sad and I still kinda am but I quickly adapted because of my family and loved ones so another thing that makes a house a home are the people there, not just the place. The last thing that makes a house a home is probably a place that makes you feel safe for the world outside. A corner in the world where you can do whatever you want without people juggling you or a place that you can lock yourself in when you want to escape.” I finished. “Now that, my class, is something different. Use that as an example to dig deeper and find what home truly means to you. I want that written down on a piece of paper in any form and you won't share it with anyone so you can put your true thoughts in it without anyone judging you.” my teacher said as everyone groaned. Houses can be bought and sold, Obtaining a home though is much harder. Mothers and fathers can be loved ones that make up your home but Even memories can be something which assists.
