HOME > HOUSE

I walk up to the familiar cream coloured brick house. I walk up the windy sidewalk and the door creaks open. I walk into the brick house and the sweet smell of wood smoke and oatmeal fills my nose from that morning. I grab a blanket and snuggle on the couch and grab a good book. 15 minutes later I hear the car door slam and the sound of the door getting unlocked. My mom walks in the door “oh it's cold in”! here she cries, “well we have to wait till dad gets home to start a fire in the wood stove”. She says. I keep reading my book as mom goes into the kitchen to get started on dinner. Soon the house is full of the smell of chicken and fresh bread. But the house still doesn't feel like home, it's still cold and quiet. A couple minutes later I hear a car pull in the driveway then the door opens and in walks my dad and my two sisters. “Boy it's cold in here”! says my dad. “ Mommy!” says my little sister running to the kitchen. My dad pulls off his coat and runs upstairs to get changed. Two minutes later he comes back down with a new outfit on. He grabs his boots and coat and goes out the back door. Soon he comes back in with piney smelling firewood. Soon dinner is ready and the house is warm. We gather around the table and enjoy a nice meal. After dinner we played games and ate snacks. Now this is Home not just a house but a home, it isn't about the warm meals, fires in the wood stove or the good books and cozy blankets that make it a home but it is the people you eat the meal with and the people who play a game by the warm fire with you. It is the joy, the people and the memories that you make that you share in these four walls that make it a home.
