When a House Becomes a Home
When a house becomes a home, you experience things differently; a home isn't just a house; a home is the life that takes place within, a place where you can be safe. A place that awakens the senses, the smell of my mom's baking for example or the flavorsome taste of my dad's cooking. The pungent scent of our herbal soap, the fresh smell of washed clothing, and the indescribable smell of my mom; comforting and safe.
I love the sound of laughing and my parents talking and my brother doing silly voices while my sisters play with their stuffies. The whistle of the air conditioner and the hum of the TV when we watch movies. The sound of our dishwasher and the sound of my dad typing on his keyboard. It’s comforting when I hear my mom sewing, and my dad doing the dishes.
I think without these things a house is not a home. A house is just walls, windows, doors, pipes, and wires. What makes a house a home is the living, breathing family within. The love, care, kindness, comfort and safety that makes it a home.
It’s all these things that come together from the smell to the taste, sound, and memories that make a home. Especially a home with memories.
I think that Habitat for Humanity will be able to fulfill every aspect of these things for others to experience. Everyone deserves a good, safe place to call home.
