Home is Where the Heart is
“Home isn’t where you’re from, it’s where you find light when all grows dark.”
Places where we feel safe and comfortable are places we call home. You make memories, learn, and make connections in homes. Some have one, others have many. These are the homes I hold very close to my heart.
My mom, dad, brother and I live in a very nice, small townhouse. At first glance it might not seem like much, but, like Doctor Who's TARDIS, it is much bigger on the inside. It is very welcoming, warm as hot cocoa in winter, and as important to me as my family. I was born there, took my first steps there, and it's where I met my brother for the first time. Here, I learn from my parents and make memories with my family.
My friends' homes are where friendships deepen, where I learn how other people live, love and how they treat their homes. These are safe spaces where I can speak freely and they'll listen. Here I learn new customs and cuisines and discover new things about my friends and how they see life.
At school my teachers are leaders who teach and guide us through difficult situations. We learn new traditions and holidays. We learn about different perspectives and try to understand. Having lots of supportive adults in one building is like having a houseful of family to help guide me through life.
Our definition of home is always changing; it is not just one specific place or time. We should remember fondly the homes that have brought us comfort; spaces that provided the foundation for our growth and development. "When we are safe at home, we are free to imagine the possibilities that lay ahead. It is where our future begins" (unknown).
