What Home Is

Home is a place where people can feel safe and warm, a place to rest after a long day. It’s the feeling of knowing that you have a place to go when you are tired. Maybe you are excited to be able to see your kids when you get home, maybe your family, or your pets. I was brought up with stories from Romania that my parents and grandmother told me. Stories about how if you wanted milk or bread, you had to wake up at 5:00am or even earlier and line up at the store. People in Romania lived on rations, barely any butter or sugar to go around and this was the normal life. Because of this my parents moved to Canada for a better life, not only for them, but also for my older sister and I. They made the choice to move away from the only place they ever called home just to be able to live a better life. All across the world, many people don’t have a home to live in or even a place to sleep in. I remember from my trip to Cuba how people lived there and it was not pretty. It was hard seeing this; everybody deserves a decent home to feel safe in, where they can rest, play and be happy. Having a home is having familiarity that comforts you and tucks you in at night, allowing you to drift off into a quiet and sedated sleep where nothing can haunt or hurt you. So you may wake up the next day and not have to think about how lucky you are this morning, this hour, this moment. You are so secure that the thought of having less has never occurred to you. This is what home is .
