Homeless (A True Story)

Hi, my name is Kasher. I am 10 years old. We just moved to a new house. Not far from our old house, but it is far enough. We live by our Oma and Opa now. It is nice to see them every now and then. I am still getting used to our new house. But I did get a room to myself! I can’t imagine what it would be like to not have a place to live. We heard about the homeless through my Mom, and at Christmas we decided to help them. So we started to pack up gifts for them. We packed up Bibles, candy canes, Tim Horton’s coffee cards and Christmas cards. Throughout the week we prayed for the gifts we packed. We prayed for the people who would get the gift bags, that they would receive the Bibles and not throw them into the garbage. We also prayed for them to have a home -- both here on earth and in heaven. It must be so hard to not have a home. It was a normal rest of the week. We had school and then three days off. Finally it was Sunday, church day. Normally we would go to church, but instead, we decided to be the church. I got dressed and had breakfast. Soon, we were in Edmonton. We went downtown, past the bus terminal. There were lots of people on the streets to give the gifts to. I was a bit scared to give a Bible to someone I didn't know for the first time. Thankfully, it was not that hard. (Some people did not want the Bibles.) I gave the first gift to a woman named Bernadette. She was sitting with two men named Michael and Dougie. We loved the name Dougie! They had three stuffies sitting with them -- Winnie the Pooh, Mickey Mouse and a teddy bear -- and they were cute! We gave a few more gifts, prayed with the people, and then left. We were going to the van when I told Mom that a person she had given a Bible to needed mitts. His name was Taryn and he had been lying on the pavement, pulling a tarp over himself like a blanket. So we went back and Mom gave her mitts to him. Eventually, we went home. And I can’t stop thinking about what it would be like to not have a place to live.
