The Leaves Above You

A large truck pulls up Sending wind and dust through my branches. A person jumps out. Then another and another. The family walks up to the land beside me. I watch as the family talks. Then they leave. Once again I am alone with only the birds Whistling. As morning dawns another gigantic truck pulls up. All the animals on my branches Stop. And watch wondering what is going On. 5 broad men jump out Each with what looks like a skinny piece of wood with a wide metal scoop at the bottom. They keep mining up the earth and dumping it in a pile all day. The next day a grand yellow machine pulls up more of the ground. The loud groan of the motor makes all the birds take flight. By the end of the day there is a Massive Square Hole. As the sun begins to reach the horizon, The men are back with colossal pieces of square lumber. Over time the men come, put the pieces of wood Into the ground. They leave. Then come back before even the bird are up. They lift a large triangular structure up on top of the other pieces. One of the chicks asks. “What is that?” I tell her it’s like the leaves above you, Keeping you sheltered the whole night Through. The next few days they work on the smaller details. Painting, planting flowers, the father puts a swing up in one of my branches, below me the children laugh and play in the soft green grass. As the sun begins to set the mother calls the the children in they go skipping into the building that once was a house, now a Home. And I am apart of that too.
