What Home Means to Me

I'm not going to lie Home is not all sunshine and rainbows There are some bad times And sad times But sometimes moments at home Are going to be stuck in your memories Home doesn't mean the structure of the building It’s what’s inside that counts Home is where I feel safe and loved Conversations while my mom is braiding my hair She likes to play African music We have deep conversations about the future My mom is such a good listener and I can trust her I also have my brother and my cat They keep me company And make me feel better A bad time is when my dad left us I don’t remember much about it But it has really hurt me I had to find out the hard way I have siblings that I didn’t know about I even have a baby brother on the way He didn’t have the courage to tell us We had to find out from a family friend But a good time is when my mom met my stepdad, William I saw my mom happy after so many years I am the daughter that he never had We’re creating a new home together So as you can see Home isn't sunshine and rainbows in the sky The weather is just like life Sometimes the clouds get gray and rain pours down But there are other times When the sun is shining And there are no clouds in the sky You can go out and have fun Home is my shelter I can always count on it It never lets me down When I'm out of my home there are struggles When I come home I can smell my mom's cooking or I can come home and help her with her cooking Home is a shelter This is why I love Habitat for Humanity It gives people a home even when they don’t have one That is what home means to me.
