What Home Means to Me

Some people think that the meaning of a word is something that you can just find in a dictionary, but I think that you sometimes have to have your own ideas and look around you to find your own answers. To me, the word “home” means the place where you take risks and learn to be brave, it is the place with all your memories, and it is the place where you learn to trust your parents. When you move to another place, you may have to leave your country, but that doesn’t mean the country that you used to live in isn’t home anymore. I had to move to Canada when I was three years old (I was born in China). I was really nervous and sad about leaving my friends, but one year later, I felt right at home! Another type of moving is just moving to a different house. It might not be as bad as you think, but you also have to leave your old neighborhood and your old neighbors. Home isn’t just the city that you are in but also the woods, swamps, and mountains around you. Sometimes you have to share your home with others: both human and animal. And you have to learn to respect both. I once had to let a duck live in my yard because it decided to build its nest in the flowerbed!!! You have the knowledge and strength to make changes in your community, however, you have to know if what you're doing is helping or damaging your home and those who share it with you. For example: donating to a charity or helping wild animals are both ways that can make your country a better place to live in while littering and hunting can really influence your home negatively. Everyone deserves a place to call home, a place where you have people to depend on when you are struggling, and a place where you can feel safe and secure.
