Home to Me

To me, home is love. It is also family, homemade food, and laughter. It is many things, but above all else, is is love. My family is what makes me feel at home. Home is having fort nights with my sisters. It is playing games with my parents when my sisters go to bed. Home is when my sisters and I go exploring in the forest across the street and spend hours playing Dragon Masters. With my family, I will always be home. To me, home is homemade food. It is coming inside after “recess” and smelling fresh curry for lunch. It is my mom’s homemade bread. Home is helping my dad make pho. As I grow older, I am playing a bigger role in cooking, and I appreciate the time and effort more. When I taste this food, and feel all the love that went into it, I know I am home. Home is that happy feeling of laughter. It is my 5-year-old sister, Juniper, making jokes - they make no sense, but they are still funny! My sister, Iris, making drawings of her imaginary friend. Home is my dad and I playing in our basement and him being super funny. It’s the love of being together, laughing and knowing that we'll always have each other, and that it’s all that we need. And though a home is every one of these things, if someone does not have the security of a safe place to live, these times of love can be overtaken by hardship. Habitat for Humanity helps ensure that families have the chance to build their own home, providing the sense of safety and security of a home and everything that comes with it.
