Meaning of Home

Home means a lot of things to a lot of people, but the problems are coming with people not being able to afford a home. Everyone deserves a home, however the prices for homes in Canada are becoming more and more expensive every year. Habitat for Humanity is doing something about that by building more affordable homes for people in need. Habitat for Humanity is giving people better and more secure lives to people who couldn’t have that before. Home has no proper meaning, but this is my meaning of home. When I think of my home, I think of the five senses. If home were a smell it would be candles burning while I’m sitting near the fireplace on a cold winter’s night. It would be pepperoni cooking on homemade pizzas in the oven when I come home from school. If home were a taste it would be my mom’s poutines which are the best ever! Home tastes like buttery, salty popcorn with sweet candy while intensely watching the Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Maple Leafs. If home were a sound it would be my mom saying, "Take your puffer!” It would be Forrest Frank and Ty Myers blasting while my family is hanging out in the kitchen. If home were a sight it would be my brothers and me playing mini hockey in the basement. It would be the beautiful pink and orange sunset as my family and I eat dinner on the deck in the summer. Home looks like me waiting in the morning for my dad to get home from the firehall. If I were to feel home I would feel the soft couch cushion as I sit on it while watching a show with my family. I would feel my cozy, warm blanket in my bed when I go to sleep. This is how I would define home if it were the five senses. My home would be nothing without my family. My mom is a very serving person and a great cook. My dad is super friendly, loves going on field trips, and is always ready to play video games with my older brothers and me. My oldest brother plays hockey and guitar. I’m always excited for when he comes to my home from his other home. My second oldest brother also plays hockey and guitar, as well as looks a lot like me. My other brother plays football and I always love playfighting with him. My family includes God who came to Earth in human form and died on the cross to save all of us from our sins. My family is a huge part of my home. I couldn’t imagine not having home. If I didn’t have a home I would be scared of the uncertainty, and I would have an empty heart, as well as a broken one. I would feel chilly without my big, warm blanket to rest under. If I didn’t have a home I would be sad because I wouldn’t have a place where I could feel like me. Another thing that I would feel is tense since I wouldn’t be relaxed and well rested. I couldn’t possibly wrap my head around the idea of not having a home. I thank Habitat for Humanity for making a huge difference in people’s lives by helping them build more affordable homes. I thank all of the volunteers for helping build these homes. All of us have different meanings of home, but they’re all right, and you shouldn’t settle for anything you’re not okay with. Ultimately, there is no right way to define home, but to me home is a safe place where even in the scary things like an asthma attack you feel protected, family where you love each other no matter what, and even in all of the chaos you still feel like you can be yourself.
