What Is a Home?
What is a home? Is it a duplex, a condo, a mansion, or a townhouse, maybe a bungalow? Whatever, it's just another word for a house. No! A home isn’t just a house, or a bungalow, a duplex, or a condo, or even a mansion, and not a townhouse; these are houses. A home is a place made just for you.
Home isn’t just a place or a house. It’s where we spend most of our time, like having a movie night on the soft couch cushions, having some popcorn and drinking some soda. Waking up every morning and getting ready all clean and crisp, looking forward to seeing what the day has to offer. A place where you don’t feel judged by what you’re wearing, how you look, and you can just be yourself.
All of us have different homes, not like an apartment, a bungalow, or such. Our homes look different in a way of comfort. One person might feel home in the food their family cooks, the way the savoury, the sweet, the comforting aroma fills the air, and as they breathe in, that aromatic scent fills their lungs, giving them a sense of ease and stress relief. Another person could say the setting of their home might be calm and relaxing, freeing their mind from all the tension that’s been building up inside them. Slowly the tension fades, their mind releases all the strain, the suffocating feeling of school, work, a big deadline due, or paying the bills and rent.
Some people’s opinion is that home is just another word for house; it holds your furniture. You also have to maintain it and pay the bills and rent that’s due.
To that I say that's true, but doesn’t it hold memories, the laughter of friends and family visiting from far away, the family gatherings, the warm and fresh food sitting on the table ready to eat, the hard work your family puts into planning a meal and cooking it? Pictures are hung up on the walls, memories that are reserved in your heart like a safe, keeping those special moments secure and guarded.
Last but not least, home is like a warm, supportive family, for whenever you're in stress or in doubt, home is always available. The way you feel the warmest sensation inside your chest is the best and most comforting feeling ever. Also, you could have more than one home. Home is anywhere you feel safe, secure, and free from stress or pressure. You could feel at home in the oddest of choices, but that doesn’t matter; all that matters is that you feel like you belong and don’t have to change who you are.
To conclude, what is a home? A home isn’t just an apartment, a duplex, or condo, nor a bungalow, and certainly not a building. Home is a place to feel the most amount of comfort you would ever feel in life, a place where you feel like you won’t be judged or neglected. A home is very different from a house.
Thank you, Habitat for Humanity, for all your hard work and dedication for doing a fundraiser every year to provide families with struggles who don’t have a secure and warm place to live in. Also, donating a couple thousand dollars and letting the family who built the home own the house, so they feel secure that they don’t lose the house and make it a safe environment, making it their home.
