The Forest
The wind was running through my hair as I sprinted down the soggy forest path in Nanoose bay, the cool spring air on my back. My brand new rescue dog, she is a blond husky/golden lab named Mila, and I were running on the wet, colourful leaves in the misty, quiet forest with just the last bit of sunlight shining through the trees. My dog Mila by my side for the first time ever. I was home outside, free, alone, only me and Mila.
The beautiful sunset above us, Mila in front of me with a small mossy stick in her mouth, wagging her tail, running through the muddy puddles, getting all her white fur wet and dirty, barking at the crows flying above. The natural smell of pine was everywhere, the sound of birds wind and streams nearby. The warm shades of yellow, red and green leaves and trees, huge muddy puddles and Mila playing in a beautiful little river. Streams coming out of the rock mountains, paths and ponds all the way around me, the grass under my feet, cold, soggy and wet.
Next thing I know, it’s getting dark and cold, the sun is setting, Mila is bolting up behind me, and my dad calls, “come inside it's getting dark!”
“Okay we’re coming,” I responded running back to my house with mud splashing up to my pants and hitting my dirty green sweater. My boots are all soggy and crusty.
That day was the very first day of my adventure with my new rescue dog, Mila, who will forever be my best friend. That was the first day she trusted me enough to run and play with me for the first time. Because of that day, the forest will always be my second home.
