Habitat Homes
Habitat for Humanity is a global non-profit organization that brings the community together to build homes. This year, it is celebrating 50 years of helping those in need. Habitat for Humanity homes are important because they help families in need of housing have a house to call home. The main locations for Habitat for Humanity are Greater Toronto Area, Heartland Ontario, Greater Ottawa, and Gateway North.
Students who live in homes with a leaking roof, broken windows, rodents, and unclean or unsafe environments often experience emotional or behavioral problems. About 1 in 4 people worldwide live in conditions that harm health, safety, prosperity, and opportunities. 64% of students in Ontario worry about sacrificing food, clothing, living essentials, and education to afford rent and mortgage payments. The average wait time for affordable housing in Grey Bruce is up to 4.5 years.
Habitat for Humanity has made over 500 000 houses since it was founded in 1976; more than 2500 homes have been built in Canada. It helped more than 13.4 million people in 2023 alone, improving their housing conditions through construction, training, and advocacy. According to a survey of more than 400 Habitat for Humanity families, children raised in a stable home are twice as likely to go to college.
Today, more than 2 million Habitat volunteers a year build, advocate, and raise awareness about the global need for shelter. Volunteering is a safe, flexible way to learn skills, meet people, and support families, typically volunteers need to be at least 16 years old. Training is provided on-site for all skill levels, from beginners to professionals, opportunities include construction, ReStore retail assistance, revitalization, and administration. Habitat for Humanity is a great way to make the world a better place.
