Home is my Nation
Where’s your home? My home is on the prairies of Winnipeg. My home forever, even if no one is still there. If I had the choice between all the money in the world or seeing my ancestors, I would choose my ancestors because money can't buy a family. My ancestors, stories, and roots are all buried in the tall grass plains. The plains are golden and warm like my me mère’s hug. With my family, I don't have to try or be anything I don't want to be. At home I am accepted, loved, and seen.
Home is with my community, on my land, and with my nation. My mom’s home is also in Winnipeg. It is where love lies. In the winter I go to the le festival du voyager and I cherish the Metis gatherings like that, where I smell delicious Bannock, and hear the sounds of fiddles and jigging. The sounds and smells remind me of home in Winnipeg. I wish I could be closer to my family, my community, and my home.
Home is like a box filled with memories that I will always remember. Even if I am far, the memories are always there. I remember sitting with my me mère in her cuddly blanket and feeling secure and safe, like my great me mère Lucienne is watching, protecting, and caring for me. My name is Maeve Juliette, and I am named after my me mère. I am a Metis person, and I am proud and powerful.
Home is like a blanket with endless stories, memories, and love. I will always remember the memories of Winnipeg. It is my home in my heart, forever and ever.
