A Meaning For Home
Home is where you hang your hat.
A proverb used by many to express that home keeps belongings safe and offers a sense of security.
A proverb not necessarily true.
Home could mean less.
Home could mean more.
Home could be a place.
Or a feeling.
Or a person.
Home could be the sound of a furnace whirring to life at 6:00 in the morning.
Home could be tripping over the same bump in the carpeted floors that’s been there since you moved in.
Home could be the heart-shaped grooves on your desk.
Home could be the mews and scratching of your cat by the door.
Home could be many things to many people, but small familiar moments like these are what might be called home by me.
The blindness of the morning.
Home might never be just a space for someone. Or it might never be more than a space.
Home might be to some, one person. Or two. Maybe a few more.
Home could’ve been something someone closed their eyes to and didn’t wake up.
Home is never the same for two people. It could be similar, yes. But not the same.
It could never be the same because it’s our experiences that shape the meaning of home.
It could change over time.
It could be because of what is heard.
It could be because of what is seen, or said.
It could also be because of what isn’t.
Home could be where a hat was never hung.
