When We Go Home
While the men put up the foundation a little girl asks her dad “When do we get off the boat
Daddy?”
While the men fill the walls with plaster the girl asks her dad again “When do we get off the
boat Daddy?” A plank comes away from the raft.
While the men place shingles on the roof, the girl gets off the raft, her father a step behind
her. They smile at the beach, and then each other.
As the men build a floor the girl and her dad sit on one sipping soup. The girl asks “Where
will we go now Daddy?” Her father answers back. “They found us a great house built by nice
people, not the bad men from back home.”
A few months later
The little girl has grown into a tall young woman. She skips home her sneakers scuffing the
pavement as she goes. She comes to her beautiful white and brown house on the corner of her
street. She walks into the smells of pancakes, chocolate and jasmine. She puts her bag down as
her father spots her from the kitchen.
Welcome home!” he says.
