A Seed Needs Home
What would it be like to be homeless? Well, one seed knew what it was like. She was a little sad seed who had no home of her own. She wanted a home but I guess the wind did not want to let her land on the ground. She floated on the wind for days and weeks, getting sadder and lonelier. She was all alone in the big wide world, where it felt that nobody wanted her. She was homeless. She had nowhere to be safe and sound and happy.
One day in a cool, shady forest a chickadee grabbed the seed out of the air. The seed was so scared it felt like she was going to die when suddenly a big hawk flew over the chickadee. The chickadee dropped the seed. The seed plunged down like a raindrop in a storm. Down, down, down she went!
Then the seed hit something. It felt like the ground but it turned out to be the palm of a child's hand. A little girl about 9 years old was standing in the forest. She looked down at her hand and saw the tiny seed. She wondered what kind of seed it was and knew it needed a comfortable home of its own. The plant pot that she had painted would be perfect. The pot was colourful and sat on the windowsill in the girl’s bedroom. The seed would be safe and sound and happy there.
The seed grew into a beautiful swamp milkweed plant. When it was time for her own seeds to leave, she told them not to worry. They too would find a home of their own. They would not be lonely and sad. Out of the window they floated on the wind into the big wide world.
