“Angelica, were you playing hooky again?” Her headmistress was scolding her. Something about this felt familiar… it couldn’t be… Angelica “Angel” Stevenson sat bolt upright in her bed. She glanced around the room as though something from the shadows was going to pounce on her. After deducing there was nothing lurking in her bedroom, trembling, she climbed out of her bed and peeked into the hallway. Taking a deep breath, then bracing herself she called out into the hall: “Mama! Papa!” The silence filled her with dread. It had been six weeks since the accident. Angel’s mother and father had been flying for work. They had been on their way home, when they called the cab. The driver had been drunk, and all three of them had to pay for his stupidity. Angel had been missing school, and hadn’t left the house. When the messenger had come bearing the news, she had thought he must have been kidding, but there was no reason he would joke about it. It had taken the first week for her to realize that her parents weren't coming back. The shock had hit her like a ton of bricks. Whenever she had been at a friend’s house, or on vacation, she had longed for home. Now, she longed for it even more. It was a few weeks later, when she sat in the dusty corner of her classroom, wishing the day would end, when the girl had come over. Angel had seen her before, her name was Lila. “Hey.” She said. Angel said nothing. “I’m really sorry about your parents. Do you want some company?” Angel shook her head. I’ll be fine. I just want to go home.”
