The Way I See My Home

If someone handed you a box of all your belongings, what would you look for first? Some would look for a teddy bear that was lost, some parents search for the baby they had lost with no heartbeat at the ultrasound. Others look for the dad who left them, and some dig for the job they had been declined. If I were given this box, I would look for my home. My home is everything to me. It's where I cope with stress, but it's also where I get stressed. It's where I have my best moments, but also where I’ve had my worst. Home may have ups and downs, but home is always where you can find peace, even if it's crying in your room or where your parents fight, home will always have a place for you. As a writer, I use the word ‘home’ to test out my pens. I always have, since I was in Grade 2. Of course, when I was younger, colours were brighter, sounds were smoother, the sun felt warmer, and light shone in places that were never dark, but when I'm at my home, it still is that way. The word ‘home’ could be four walls and a roof, but to me, it’s a place you belong, that brings a warm feeling into your heart, making your body and soul feel safe, knowing that everything will be okay. Longing for home can mean longing for a feeling of warmth that you can’t quite name or safety you’ve never known that lets you put your shoulders down. Now, what would you choose from your box?
