The Meaning of Home

A home is where you and your family eat, laugh, cry, and make happy memories. In my kitchen, wonderful smells come drifting through the house. I can smell fish, chicken, cheese, mushrooms, and more delicious scents that make my mouth water and remind me that I’m hungry. My dad makes the best meals. In the living room, you can hear warm laughter. That makes me feel happy. When I’m feeling upset, I go and watch my mom’s fish swim around in their medium sized tank. I like the blue rocks and the plants at the bottom of the tank. They make me feel calm and that always makes me feel better. My yard is also part of my home. In the summer, we swim in our pool. My dad grills burgers on the barbecue. They are one of my favourite foods and remind me of summer and the warm weather. When I swim in the pool, it cools me down on a hot day. That feels so refreshing. I love rolling around on the bottom of the pool, underwater. That makes me feel relaxed. I enjoy making memories outside with my mom. We enjoy picking raspberries in the bush and one time we even made ice-cream with the berries. My room is where I like to go and relax after a long day. I would call my room my sanctuary because it is quiet and peaceful. This room is my very own and I can just chill by myself. I like reading a lot. I go to my room to read because it’s quiet and I can avoid my brothers. One time, my brothers got into my room and reset my alarm clock to 1 am. It was really annoying and it was hard for me to fall back to sleep. Speaking about my brothers, they are not always annoying. Sometimes they help me get stuff done, like sometimes I will have to clean up the living room, and my brothers will help me to put a few pillows on the couch before leaving. There are times when we play card games together in the living room. My mom is helping my brother to be a better sport if he loses the game. These activities help us to learn; to learn from our mistakes. There is one time of the year, around the end of January, where my home is away from home. It is in Hawaii. I love going to a place called Kea Lani. It’s my favourite hotel on the island of Maui. It’s warm there and every morning, when you go out onto the balcony, you can hear the birds singing and the waves crashing. We met some friends there a few years ago. We’ve been meeting up with them every year ever since. They’ve become very close friends and we are making memories together. The things that make my house a home are that it is a safe place; it feels comforting and cozy. My house would not be a home without my family. We are adding to our family by getting a dog. My hope for our new dog is that he enjoys my room as much as I do. I hope he cuddles with me that he chooses to spend time with me. He will likely bond with Mom first because she’s going to pick him up. I think he will likely be scared and nervous when he comes home, but after a few weeks he will calm down, start exploring and then he will have a new home with us.
