The Meaning of Home

When I get home, from school or a trip, I feel safe. Stepping into my home is like stepping into a place full of warmth and safety - a place I can be myself. I can see my parents and feel the ever-so-welcoming safety of their embrace. I’m in my house again, the place I know I belong, and where I’ll always fit in. I can always smell the warm spices from when my dad is cooking in the kitchen, and hear my mom typing on the keyboard. And years can go by, maybe one or two. But years end and begin, and we change too. Over the years, decades, and maybe even longer, in our homes, one thing stays the same. The feeling of returning after a while, and the memories we make along the way. Those stay forever, and never change. No matter how much time passes, you will always remember the place. Where you felt safest, where you knew you’d be loved. Where you’re cared for, and where kindness never ends. Your home has it all. But for some people, they don’t have one. May it be due to lack of affordable housing, natural disasters, discrimination or more. So thank you, Habitat for Humanity, for giving people a home. For giving them a place to belong, and a place they can call their own.
