From A House To A Home
I was born in Uganda, and I loved it there. I did not want to leave, but my
family did not think the same. The next thing I knew, I was on an airplane
headed right for Canada. I looked outside the plane window at the small
houses beneath me. Once we arrived in Canada, I did not know what to do. I
looked at the sky; it was not bright and cheerful like it was in Uganda; the sky
was dark and gloomy. Trust me, no 3-year-old would like this. Soon we made
our way to our basement. The only thing I could feel was sadness and
coldness. The place was small, with two rooms, but still enough. My brother
and I shared a room while my mom and dad shared another room. We slept
on mattresses. If you ask me, I prefer Uganda, but slowly this structure we
called a basement became our home. We had more home-cooked meals, and
we made more memories here. I kind of liked it. Going to school was a little
hard at a young age because young children are not so smart, so I got bullied
for where I was from and my accent because I could not speak proper English.
But I did not let that stop me.
Over time, I grew more adapted to my new surroundings and began to
appreciate the beauty of Canada's changing seasons. The beautiful colors of
autumn leaves and the magical sight of snowflakes coming from the sky
slowly warmed my heart.
As I learned more English and made friends who accepted me for who I was.
The warmth of my family provided a strong foundation, and our little
basement apartment transformed into a haven filled with laughter, love, and
the delicious aroma of meals that reminded us of home. We celebrated our
achievements, no matter how small, and cherished the moments we spent
together.
Though my journey began with uncertainty and homesickness, it evolved into
a rich tapestry of experiences that shaped the person I am today. Looking
back, I realize that while I left a piece of my heart in Uganda, I found another
home in Canada, filled with hope and endless possibilities and thus is how this
basement structure became my home, because a house is just a structure but
a home is a structure made of love happiness and more.
