Home is Where the Heart is
What is a home? More than just a house. A house is a structure with four walls and a roof. A home is so much more. A home is a place where my family is, my comfort zone. When at home I feel loved by everyone around me. I feel safe and secure when in my home.
We all know where our house is. But our homes can be anywhere, and can even be many places at once. My grandparents were born in Italy and immigrated here to Canada, where they grew up with roots in both countries and memories of home both far away across an ocean and also in their own backyard. For them, home is both where they were born and where they started a family, now of many generations.
With their traditions and culture, I feel just as at home at my grandparents' place as I do in my own home. When walking into these homes I remember all the memories that lie, and I try not to cry. From when I was a baby to now. I feel awesome because love is in the air, and I smell the sweet aroma of a luscious dish. I twitch as I see the dish, as I devour the plate I cherish the memories of me and my family eating my mom’s delicious recipes. I can taste and smell home too! Home awakens my senses.
I can be at home anywhere in the world, as long as I am with my family who love me. When we are together, we have built our home.
So where is home? Home is where the heart is. In a house, a country, a favourite dish. In a smile, a hug, a familiar face, and a warm embrace.
