The Meaning of Home

What is the meaning of home? Is there really one definition or is there multiple? Is it a place, feeling, or both? What is home? If you’re not sure, that’s okay because I’m Lily and today I’m telling you what home means to me! Firstly, when you hear the word “home,” what do you think of? Lots of people think of family. I think of family. Family isn’t just the people your related to. It’s the people you choose to let into your inner circle, the people you let close to you. Family is positive people who make you feel safe and at home. I guess that’s why people think of family when they hear “home,” because their family makes them feel safe, welcome, happy and basically most definitions of home. Secondly, lots of people get the words house and home mixed up. Home is where your family is, where you feel safe. At home you have a sense of belonging, and it’s the place where you can be yourself. Home is a feeling, and that feeling can’t be bought, unlike a house. A house is an object, or a place. A house may not be inhabited or maybe it is. Your house may not be your home, but maybe it is. You can pick out a house, but you can’t really pick out your home. Your head doesn’t pick out your home, your heart does. Last but not least, home means safety. Home is like your base in a game of tag, where you are safe, and no one can touch you. When you think of home you think of safety, and when you think of safety your mind probably wanders to home. When you’re at home you are safe. Maybe it’s your parents that make you feel safe, or maybe you are the parent. Either way, home makes me feel of safety. Maybe you grew up in your home, maybe you didn’t. Either way, your home is your home, and no one can change that. Home is your safe place, your sanctuary from the outside world. Home is a feeling, a state of mind, a community where you can be yourself and that’s okay. Home can be many different things to many different people, but this is my opinion and this is what home means to me!
