What home means to me
My home means the world to me, it is where I am able to seek privacy in moments where I am experiencing great frustration about issues that are important to me. My home is my sanctuary, a place where I know family comes together. I believe every person deserves to have a place they can call home. Everyone should experience a space where there's warmth, safe surroundings, and a place where one can have privacy and express themselves. People deserve to feel cared for, safe and love
Taking those first steps into my home after a cold day makes me recognize how fortunate I am to experience a warm heat come across me. Drowsing asleep for a nap in my dads warm and comfortable bed makes me think twice of how other unfortunate people cannot enjoy the same privileges of warmth I am lucky enough to have. Knowing that I won't have to worry about where I will sleep at night or how cold it will be, I think of how fortunate I am to have a warm place to stay. Waiting even 10 minutes in the cold is torture for me, I cant imagine having to sleep, eat and live outside every single day especially in bad weather conditions. It is unfortunate to say that many of these people weren't provided with proper education or opportunities. Houseless people are unfairly treated and judged from living outside. Think about if you were living outdoors, there would be no warm showers, no guaranteed meal, no clean clothing for you to wear, no roof over your head, no safety, and limited access to health care. I think everyone should have a home.
Imagine a moment where you might have felt unsafe or scared. Times you might hear noises you're unaware of, or walking home at night. People who live houseless most likely go through this feeling everyday. Many houseless individuals might be concerned for personal safety, stealing or catching illnesses. Every night you would have to find a place where you can rest and feel more secure. Even then would it still be safe? Everywhere, dangerous risky things happen and houseless people constantly feel unsafe. Feeling a sense of security should be a human right, where all people shouldn't have to experience being exposed or threatened. I cannot imagine feeling a constant worry of fear. A home is where you should feel safe and open.
Having a home isn't just walls and a roof over your head, it's a place where you express yourself, be genuine, and feel open. It's where you're able to shut the door when you're overwhelmed, It's where you can perceive a sense of relief, where you can make new memories with loved ones. A home is your own place to escape to when feeling strong emotions. Just closing the door and having your own space to calm down is like a need. Privacy is something that houseless people don't get to have. They can't just close an imaginary door, when they are upset, or frustrated. Houseless people don’t get the chance to have their own privacy. Picture yourself outside with just a small cardboard box as your bed, maybe there's no door for you to shut, maybe there's nobody there to just hug you when you're sad, maybe you felt like you couldn't share your emotions with anyone. Nobody should feel like that and a home could help.
A home is where everyone should feel safe, cared for and open. Where you can share your feelings, have a sense of safety and warmth. Every person deserves a home
