Home is Where the Heart (and Sweater) Is!

Home is more than just a place to sleep. It’s where my heart feels safe, where my dreams take flight, and where love surrounds me like a warm hug. For me, home is a journey a story written across three countries, each one shaping me into the person I am today. I was born in Russia, where the winter snowflakes danced outside my window like tiny ballerinas. I was too young to remember much, but I know it was the first place I called home. When we moved to Nigeria, home became something different sunny days, the sound of laughter with cousins, and the smell of jollof rice filling the air. It was a place where I learned about my roots, my culture, and the strength of my family. But my home changed again when we moved to Canada. At first, I felt like a stranger but the kindness of the people made me feel welcome and the cold winters reminded me of Russia. In my new home, I discovered new foods, new friends, and a new way of life. Even though I sometimes miss Nigeria and the memories I made there, I’ve realized that home is not just a building. It’s where I feel loved, accepted, and free to be myself. To me, home means safety. It’s having a warm bed, food to eat, and a place where I can learn and grow. Home is my mom’s hugs and her warnings. It’s her reminding me to wear a sweater, even when it’s not that cold, and to drink water after each meal. Those little things make home feel like the safest place in the world. Home is not just about where I live; it’s about the people who make me feel like I belong. That’s why I agree with Habitat for Humanity that everyone deserves a home. A safe place to live! where children can focus on their dreams.
