Together we are home
You can’t make a home by yourself; you need a community because together we are home. You can’t make peace and joy by yourself; you need a home full of love and care. You can’t make memories by yourself; you need a family.
The way my mom makes the delicious food that fills the air with aroma doesn’t taste the same alone. The warmth of my blanket wrapping around me brings comfort to my heart. The meow of my cats and their soft fur wrapping around my legs makes me feel loved.
Pretty furniture does not make a home; it’s the traditions that are made and passed on. The candles burning in the dark light my way until it’s bright. A home is the love, care, joy, and laughter that spreads across it. A street with a cardboard box as a home, an apple core to eat, and a cup of dirty water to drink is not a home. A home is four walls and a roof, but there is more to a home, like family, memories, and movie nights. Celebrating Christmas and Easter, the joy of those great times—all come together to make memories.
Some memories are fun and full of joy; some are sad, with crying and sadness, but all those bad moments can leave, and we look into the future and prepare for the adventures that we long to seek. We have some good times and some bad times too, but the memories we make will last forever. Think about it— not every boy or girl has a home. Some people don’t even have a family. But you can help change that. Sometimes, it’s just one kind word that will brighten someone’s entire day. And when you see the smile on that person’s face, you will feel so good inside.
You have the privilege of having a home. You can’t make a home by yourself; you need a community because together we are home.
Thank you, Habitat for Humanity, for starting this opportunity for kids and people so they can have a home to be loved and safe.
