What Is Home to Me?

Did you know that calling somebody “homeless” is the wrong term? You should say “unhoused” because a home is not just a house or a place to live. It’s the place that feels like warmth and comfort. To me, home is where I live but it’s also a hockey arena. When I step into a hockey arena, I feel loved by the people around me. I feel like I fit in with people on my team, just like I feel with my family. I can tell my teammates everything without judgement. When I enter the dressing room I feel acceptance. It’s like when I walk into my home and feel the instant love from my family as they surround me with care. Home is skating on the outdoor rink and seeing the snowflakes flutter down like dancing diamonds in the magnificent black night sky. Home is spending time with my family on adventures at the lake that make memories lasting a lifetime. It's about the time I spend with my family and my friends. I can bring those memories back at any time I need to, and it is like it was yesterday bringing me the warmest feeling inside. Home isn’t technology or furniture. Home is the long adventures that you take with the people that you love -“family”. Home isn’t about the place or the building. Home is about the people who surround with care. That way, no matter where you are, you are always home. Thank you, Habitat for Humanity, for giving more people the opportunity to be as fortunate as I am and live in a caring home, wherever my family and friends are.
