Home is Where My Roots Grow

Home can’t be found, it can only be created. Because making a house a home is like growing a tree. It takes time to grow the roots but once we do, creating leaves and branches is easy. It starts with the seed. And if we can plant that seed We can create our home. The waves of negative emotions wash away as I walk through the door. Into a place where I always feel I belong. My home. The roots of my tree are strong. I enter the living room, memories, Both old and new come rushing back right away. This is where the roots of my home have been created. Without these memories, my home wouldn’t be as great as it is today. Like without sunshine and rain, trees wouldn’t thrive. When I stride into the kitchen, I'm greeted by family. These people make my house less empty and more vibrant. And are the ones who planted the seed of home, and have cared for it since the beginning. My basement has changed over the years. It went from an empty cement room alone, To a place where the thought “nothing’s impossible” reappears. Leaves on my tree have fallen, And new ones have grown. Like trees, We all have unique homes. Some trees have the same bark, just like some of our houses may look the same from the outside. But the roots, leaves and branches are what make our houses turn into homes. As Helen Keller wrote, “The best and most beautiful things cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart”. Home really is one of the best and most beautiful things in the world. Everyone deserves a home. Thank you to Habitat for Humanity for helping people plant their seeds of home.
